Energy Plus vs Pepco

The confusion of energy deregulation in Pennsylvania and Maryland is not uncommon. You have been using the same monopoly electric company for several decades and so now what?

Well you still will get your electricity service from the same pole and wires company as always which might be BG&E, Pepco, Comed and others.

When you choose to go with an alternate Pennsylvania or Maryland electricity company that is not your utility pole and wire company nothing changes regarding delivery of service and how outages are handled.

You still call your utility company you have always used when outages occur and they are the responsible party for getting service restored.

Energy Plus sells retail electricity service sells electric rate plans that compete against Pepco electric company and ComEd in both MD and PA.

We mention Energy Plus because they have a very large direct mail campaign and you have likely seen advertisements offering competitive electric rates as compared to ComEd and perhaps Pepco.

When comparing these prices between Energy Plus vs Pepco I recommend calling both companies. Ask specific questions I outlined below to assist in making an accurate comparison so you can make a clear confident decision.

  • Ask them if their electric rate is a variable rate that changes after the first month.
  • Ask to see if the rate is only competitive the first month and what happens on the subsequent 2nd month of service to the price.
  • Check for historical information on what their variable price has done the last several months in Pennsylvania and Maryland.
  • Decide if their rate plan is a teaser price that is competitive only for the 1st month.

Energy Plus vs PepcoNow call up Pepco or ComEd or whomever you currently have electric service and ask the following questions.

  • Ask them if their electric rate is fixed or variable.
  • Ask if their variable rate goes up on the 2nd month or if it has ever gone down in price after the 1st month of service.
  • Check if their variable rate is a teaser price that is substantially lower to hook you in.
  • See if their variable electricity rate follows a fuel commodity market or goes up and down related to other factors.

Once you have asked these questions you will likely have a better idea of which electric company has the better rate plan. You can make a clearer more consumer informed decision when asking point blank questions to make that Energy Plus vs Pepco comparison.

Compare Spark Energy and BG&E

A solid way to get started in the shopping process is to compare a main line monopoly electric company in Maryland that has been broken up through the deregulation process with a new competitor to the market. Spark Energy has entered Maryland after becoming a large successful electricity supplier in Texas and is a good alternate electric company to compare prices against big brand energy companies like BG&E and Pepco.

When contacting Spark Energy you will want to take down their fixed and variable electricity prices for several different terms. Once you have a list of their rates for that day you will want to verify what the prices include. Here are a few questions to go over with Spark Energy Maryland.

Do your fixed rates include all fees and charges such as transmission, distribution, and generation charges?

Do your fixed rates include government taxes and fees as well as any ancillary charges?

What variable costs are a part of my fixed electric rate? (Meaning what may cause my “fixed rate” to change in price?

Once you have these questions answered you will want to write down the different variations of the price of the Spark electricity rate depending on what is and is not included.

With this rate information go ahead and call up BG&E or Pepco and ask them to quote you on a fixed electric rate for several different rate terms. Typically a good popular fixed rate term in Maryland will be anywhere from 6 months out to 24 months fixed.

With a fixed electricity rate in MD you will stay on that rate for the term of the contract until the term expires. Once your MD electricity rate expires you will need to shop and renew on a new rate plan or assume a variable price.

Once you have BG&E on the phone ask them similar questions that you asked Spark Energy as well as get multiple rate plan prices.

Attempt to write down the rate plans and prices in a chart that shows Spark Energy and BG&E side by side in an easy to follow comparison.

This is pretty much all you have to do to begin your research into a competitive Maryland electricity rate.

If you would like an energy consulting company like ours to do a more in depth commercial or industrial electricity reverse auction than we can do a more advanced version of what we explained above.

Our Maryland electricity reverse auction involves having multiple Maryland electric companies compete to win your business. We have each energy supplier in MD submit their best bid for your account for multiple fixed rate terms.

For larger companies that want spot market, heat rate, and or natural gas components priced and locked in separately we can assist in the reverse auction incorporating these more advanced quotes as well.

For most moderately sized businesses a fixed electric rate plan will be your best option when using our reverse auction.

Once we have facilitated bidding down the prices that come in from multiple MD electricity suppliers we put a detailed electricity comparison proposal together.

We send this proposal over and have our energy consultant call you to go over the details.

Our process allows you to get a cheaper Maryland electricity rate for your business than what you could achieve on your own going through the same process.

We are able to achieve a better MD electric rate because of our relationships we have with multiple Maryland electric providers.

These energy companies know they must shave off as much retail margin as possible to win the bid as we have multiple competing providers competing on each and every reverse auction we send through.

Our fee is paid by the Maryland electric company and so there is no obligation to go through this process and if anything you will be educated through the process even if you decide to stay with your current electric company.

To begin please provide your name and email in the box above.

Spark Energy is an electricity service provider that looks to empower its customers. At the foundation of Spark Energy you will find three S’s. Savings, Service, and Support. Spark was founded in 1999 to begin as an early pioneer of retail energy business. Since that time Spark Energy has grown to become a nation-wide provider from California to New York with 250 employees serving hundreds of thousands of customers. Spark Energy utilizes the energy experience of its executive team to build its three S foundation as they get lower prices, better customer experience, and support for the community.

For savings, Spark utilizes their energy knowledge and buying power to purchase electricity at the lowest price possible and then passes the savings on to its customers. At the time this article was written Spark was offering rates that were quite a bit cheaper than many other providers that compete against them. To begin their customer’s savings right away Spark Energy offers an automatic 8% discount for the first 2 months of a 24 month variable rate contract.

This company empowers its customers with helpful links and articles to give them full understanding of what happens in Spark Energy. They also offer helpful tips so that its customers can save on energy, thus saving on money beyond the lower rates that Spark Energy offers.

Before deciding to go with a variable electric rate just keep in mind that with this type of price there is no guarantee what the price will do after the first 2 months of service. For many the variable plan acts as a teaser and hooks people in but some customers may find after a few months that the rate is not as great as it first was.

If you are trying to make your mind up about which provider and price to consider just keep in mind that a fixed price agreement although often times more expensive than variable prices is a smarter choice.

We recommend considering a fixed agreement with Spark if they offer it before making a final decision to get on a variable plan as you will know what you will be paying the entire term of the plan.

Houston Texas Electricity Suppliers

Houston Texas offers a lot of positives when it comes to electric choice. Because Houston is the energy hub of Texas many electric providers choose to be headquartered here.

What happens in the energy hub of Texas is new rate plans are often tested and released first in the Houston Texas market. Electric choice in Houston offers choices like prepaid electric companies, no-deposit plans, 6 month fixed rates, 48 month fixed rates, and even short month to month rates.

Although you have several Houston Texas electricity suppliers to choose from you also have to filter through rate plans that are nothing more than a scam.

Often you will find that Houston electricity rate plans that are month to month have the most issues. Customers sign up on a teaser price when choosing a variable electric rate in Houston and relate to it as choosing a competitive price. What than happens after the first month is a significant increase in price.

Rather than being hooked in to a teaser price it is recommended to compare fixed Houston electricity price offers. The expectations with a fixed plan are as you see it. You will not deal with the headache of believing you are on a competitive rate only to see it go up when choosing a fixed plan.

You can use the zip code chart on this page to compare multiple Houston Texas electricity suppliers and rate plans. You can compare our prices with rates you may have seen with Houston Reliant Energy and calculate the savings difference.
